“Mindset is a skill. It can be taught and learned.” 💭

A few years ago I ran across a concept called “Neutral Thinking”. It’s used by CEOs and Navy SEALs, among others, to perform at a high level even in extreme-stress environments.

The problem that Neutral Thinking identifies?

People tend to mistakenly project past failure, past success, or their current emotional circumstance onto future events through unrealistic positivity/negativity (in a sense, fortune telling/catastrophizing).

The solution?

The idea behind this form of AQ is that one can cultivate a mindset that disengages from emotions in the realm of decision-making.

Russell Wilson, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback (& genuinely decent human-being 🏈), is an example of how one engages in this practice well. He recently gave some addresses on the topic:

What Does It Look Like?

- “You have three bad quarters, you’ve thrown four interceptions, you OWN that. But… the next seven minutes are going to be based on what you DO, not what you DID.”

How Does One Develop This Mindset?

- “The easiest way to start... is to write out where you want to go. What’s my end destination? Then I think about where I am at currently. Right now. Then I think about the necessary steps to get there.”

• Let go of the past.
• Exist in the present.
• Determine which direction you’re heading.
• Make steps in the present moment to change course or to stay focused on the task at hand.
• Adjust as necessary.

As Michael Jordan once said, “why would I worry about missing a shot I haven’t even taken yet?” 🏀
